Course Purpose and Description:
The purpose of this defensive tactics system is designed to teach police officers how to effectively deal with individuals at all levels of resistance, both standing and on the ground. Students will learn to apply techniques in a manner that constitutes reasonable force with minimal effort. In addition to developing these operational skills, the course is designed to create confident, competent instructors who can accurately teach, demonstrate, and articulate these techniques within their own agencies.
This course provides instructor-level training in standing and ground defense, including strikes, joint locks, weapon retention, ground escapes, control holds, and response-to-resistance documentation. Students will learn standardized but flexible teaching methodology to transfer these skills effectively to officers within their agencies, ensuring they leave the program fully prepared to teach, demonstrate, and articulate each technique as certified defensive tactics instructors.
Course Goals:
- Certify each student as a Blue Shield Tactical Systems Response to Aggression Instructor.
- Ensure students demonstrate knowledge of techniques through physical demonstration, teach-backs, and written examination.
- Build instructor-level understanding of technique application, teaching strategies, and use-of-force articulation.
*This course is partially funded by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
