PURPOSE OF COURSE: The purpose of this course covers instruction regarding the array of post trauma stress reactions in others, vicarious traumatization, acute stress reactions, post trauma reactions, and suicide prevention and intervention along with didactic surrounding the process of demobilization, crisis management, and conducting critical incident debriefings. The attendee will receive step-like instruction on how to conduct a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) utilizing the Mitchell Model for personnel, to help the attendee to understand the purpose for a CISD and learn how to help those who have experienced trauma in their lives. The attendee will also receive instruction on the tools for effective communication skills via active listening techniques through applied learning techniques and exercises.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This 2-day course will assist supervisors, trainers and officers in recognizing trauma stress reactions in others, particularly the signs of vicarious traumatization, acute stress reactions, post trauma reactions, and suicide prevention and intervention. The attendee will learn, step by step phases 1-7 of the Mitchell Model along with receiving instruction regarding demobilization, crisis management, defusing, and the purpose for conducting a critical incident debriefing. First Responders in today’s police and public safety agencies/departments must learn how to recognize and provide initial support and referral for those co-workers/colleagues and first responders who have experienced trauma in their lives or who may experience or have post-traumatic stress symptoms, appropriately linking them with mental health services if and when warranted.
COURSE GOALS:
- This training course is designed to provide a framework for conducting a step-by-step critical incident debriefing utilizing the Mitchell Model and practicing all 7 phases of the model.
- Understanding Critical Incidents, Signs & Signals, Anxiety, & Anxiety Recovery
- Understanding Vicarious Traumatization, Acute Stress Reactions, & Post Trauma Stress Reactions
- Understanding PTSD signs and Symptoms and how to support someone experiencing such symptoms
- Understanding the commonalities of suicidality, utilizing prevention and intervention techniques
- Understanding surrounding demobilization, crisis management briefings, & critical incident defusings.
- Learning 14 active listening skills and demonstrating such techniques
- Demonstrating scenarios regarding the 7 phases of a CISD along with processing lessons learned from critical incident experiences.
Funded in Partnership with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, specialized L.H.I. Grant.
This training covers the following mandates:
- Crisis Intervention - 2.5 hours
- Officer Wellness and Mental Health - 8 hours
